To register, please download the registration form [DOCX] and drop off the completed form at your property management office.

Free lunch and snacks will be provided at ALL chess classes and the tournament.

Chess Training Classes

Dates: August 16–19 & August 23–26
Time: 11 AM–3 PM
Location: Black History Museum & Cultural Center, 122 W. Leigh Street

Chess Tournament

Date: Friday, August 27
Time: 8 AM–5 PM (Must arrive by 8 AM)

Awards & Recognition Program

Date: Saturday, September 4

  • 1st Place Winner – Monetary award, 1st place trophy, tournament-style chess set, clock, badge
  • 2nd Place Winner – Monetary award; 2nd place trophy, tournament-style chess set, badge
  • 3rd Place Winner – Monetary award; 3rd place trophy, badge
  • ALL players will receive Bright Minds Chess Club Certificates of Achievement

About the Club

Bright Minds Chess Club is a program created by Bernice Travers and Fleming Samuels as a component of the Bernice E. Travers Foundation’s “Strengthening Black Families” Initiatives. The Bright Minds Program offers activities to inspire at-risk youth to develop abilities that can be transferred into positive life skills. This session is offered to students in 8, 9, and 10th grades.

  • Child will learn how to process information in a timely manner.

  • Students will develop good sportsmanship when they win or lose.
  • Child will learn how to work cooperatively.
